So nominees for the best musical of the year are: Billy Elliot, Next to Normal, Rock Of Ages and Shrek the musical!
I haven’t seen Rock of Ages and Shrek yet, but I don’t think even if I see the shows my opinion will change. Rock of Ages doesn’t have original songs, I am sure I will like it (I love rock musicals) but for the Best Musical of the year I need something more. Shrek – it’s Shrek. Next to normal is good, very good and very depressing for me.
No, it’s good - Broadway has to have different types of musicals (like there are different types of movies) - like musical comedy, drama, thriller, physiological drama and so on. And I agree that”Next to normal” is good in its own genre. I would call it “physiological drama”. But again, it doesn’t have choreography and it’s too heavy, too depressing.
Billy Elliot, on the other hand, has everything Broadway Musical should have: Great touching and inspiring story, a lot of amazing dancing numbers, great songs which make you dance on your seats. And a lot of moments where you can cry. And by the way it’s drama too. Sometimes it’s even emotionally similar to “Next to normal” – I mean relationships of Billy with his mother (who knows the story and watched both of the musicals those people will understand me).
I think that Billy got 15 nominations (and shared the record with the musical “Producers”) for reason and I hope it wins.
